A quick DIY Job
Many of you will have Caldwells windows – the hopper style ones that are either open or closed. We really love ours as they can be fully removed to let more air in. We very often do this in summer and I also do it in winter, when I am making marmalade, to allow the steam to escape more easily.
In winter, good ventilation is vital to help avoid condensation which, despite having double-glazed windows, can still form on the aluminium frames. Having the window fully open can be a bit chilly.
Friends Helen & Russell (fellow Ortomariners) from Professor Pat Pending visited us recently and told us about some stays that Cadwells supply, which have two opening positions The first allows the window to open a crack – enough for good airflow – and the second is the fully open position.
The catches – known as “Slotted Roller Stays” are £6 each +VAT and are supplied very swiftly by Caldwells, It is then an easy, half-hour, job to remove the old stays and replace with the new ones. The holes are in exactly the same place and you can reuse the original screws. And all you’ll need is a suitable screwdriver – in our case it was a Phillips crosshead type.
It’s a breeze to do and really increases the flexibility of your windows.
Step1 – remove original screws and clean area

Step 2 – Affix new slotted stays – repeat for each remaining stay to be replaced.

Step 3 – Admire your new two-position windows

We paid £5 postage for our new stays and they were despatched by return. They were very helpful – especially as I did not originally know the name of what I wanted!
